Sylus rolls his shoulders and neck with a sigh. It echoes slightly in the elevator, mirrored ceiling reflecting his exhausted face as he looks up. He glowers as he wipes away a stripe of blood from his cheek. Not his own. No, his Evol wiped itself out dealing with his own injuries. Now he's running on empty. His body aches more than it usually does, muscles groaning with every motion, patience left on a razor-thin wire with the headache pounding at his temples.

The elevator doors slide open quietly. He trudges out into the penthouse. Kicks off his shoes without a care for where they land. Shrugs off his jacket and tosses it onto a hook, tsking at the new tears and stains in the leather.

The entire building is rigged up with elaborate security; even a fly can't get in without him knowing about it. But as he walks further inside, he still glances around, like anybody could be waiting around any corner. Enemies aren't the only thing he has an eye out for, though.

The signs of you are everywhere: Dishes in the sink from dinner, your shoes lined up by the door, blankets and pillows moved in the living room, the lingering fragrance of you in the air.

He slowly cracks open the bedroom door. Light creeps out from behind him, reaching out across the floor. It illuminates the couch, and the book and handheld gaming system left on its cushions. Just past it, he can see the bed, and the impression of his beloved tucked under its covers.

His shoulders sag. He can finally recognize this place as being safe and secure now that he can see you. He almost groans in his overwhelming desire to just crawl in beside you, wrap you up tight in his arms and bury his face in your neck, breathing you in deep. But he's gross; bloody, dirty, smelly. You deserve better than that.

So, he creeps in slowly, carefully, doing his best not to wake you up as he gathers fresh clothes. Soft clothes. They're not designer, or even luxurious; you picked them out for him when he took you shopping, after you dragged him into a retail store. He'd raised a brow at you and said you could go to any high end store you wanted, but you'd wanted to go there. You were beaming when you found clothes for him, "normal" clothes, you'd said. And right now, he longs to feel normal.

He slips into the bathroom. Condensation still beads up on the shower door and tile walls. When he runs the hot water, a fresh wave of your shampoo and body wash comes wafting up through the air with the steam. The heat is heaven on his muscles. He makes a low sound in his throat as he just stands there, letting the water spray down on his hair and back, until he finally reaches for his shampoo.

He towels himself off with stilted movements. His arms are tired. He only bothers to half-dry his hair, just until it's left lightly damp, sticking up all over. He checks himself over in the mirror, looking for any remaining marks or injuries he missed. There's a few scars that haven't fully faded; nothing worth pulling out the kit for. He leans against the counter as he brushes his teeth, allowing his eyes to close while he does.

He turns off the bathroom light before he opens the door. The bedroom is completely dark. It takes his eyes a moment to adjust. You've barely shifted since he last saw you. An overwhelming wave of relief coasts over him as he's finally able to join you.

He pulls the blankets down on his side, crawls in and immediately travels past the middle to your side. His hands glide over your body as he wraps you up in his arms, sliding under your shirt and up your back, pulling you in close. He drops his head into the crook of your shoulder, nuzzling shamelessly against you. You don't wake up, but you do slip your arms loosely around his shoulders, tangling your fingers into his damp hair. It's all second nature, so ingrained into you to hold your partner.

You breathe right beside his ear. He hears it all: the soft sigh as you relax into his embrace, the steady inhale and exhale, the rasp of a snore - a reminder that you are alive, that you are safe, and that no matter how awful the world outside can be, you are here, with him.

The Last Holiday

Summary: Dany Targaryen has just arrived at her dream resort to spend the Holiday Season. Once a shy woman who kept her head down and let others walk all over her, a recent event in her life has changed her perception. Now she is grabbing life by the jingle bells and living to the fullest. Not even Jon Snow, the arrogant and out of touch, wealthy, CEO of Starklannd Department stores, where she worked in retail, can ruin her holiday. Though he may not be able to say the same for her.

Preview: Podrick dodged the bustling people with expertise. All the guests around them were dressed in designer clothes, their outfits and accessories costing more than most people’s houses. When he reached the center, he noticed her lagging behind to take in her surroundings, and stopped to wait for her. As she reached his side, a familiar face walked past her smiling curiously.

“Senator,” Dany greeted.

“Miss,” he nodded back, genuine interest in his mismatched eyes.

“Well, I suppose I know why Senator Lannister was unable to attend the meeting,” she murmured to herself, shaking her head in disappointment. When she smirked up at the bellhop, she watched him scrutinize her from her Martellmart boots to her Starklannd parka, trying to figure out who she was and if she was important.

Raising a bushy brow at him, she waited, amused. This seemed to shake him out of it, gesturing for her to approach the reception desk to check-in.

“Daenerys Targaryen,” she said, giving her name and passport to the buxom woman smiling slyly behind the desk.

Her green eyes already focused on the screen as she typed her info into the computer. Dany leaned over and squinted to read her name tag. ‘Ros’.

“I’m sorry, Madam Targaryen, your room is not quite ready. We were not expecting you for two more hours.”

Dany smiled fondly. “Well, Ros, I wasn’t expecting to get here by helicopter either. Can you please see if another room is ready? My time is precious these days.”

“Of course.”

The keyboard continued clacking as Ros went back to her screen so Dany let her eyes wander. A giant tree decorated with ornaments and ribbon stood tall next to the grand staircase. It had to be twenty feet high, dwarfing her petite frame as she strained her neck to see the enormous star on top.

Poinsettias were arranged on each side of the desk, sitting on tables in a lounge area, and hanging from the walls. Golden statues of children of the forest watched from the top of columns. She studied the painting of the wolves above, the enchanting way they frolicked as a pack on one side and sat in awe and facing what she now noticed was a weirwood tree in the center, its crimson leaves and bleeding smile staring down at her.

She knew the north believed in the Old Gods and the weirwood trees were how they believed they could speak to their gods, and their gods could watch over them, and answer their prayers. Only a handful of trees still stood, though she hadn’t a clue where one may find one. The more she gazed upon the ethereal scene above her, the more she felt transported into it.

If she closed her eyes she could feel the cold wind upon her cheeks, the rough bark under her palm as she whispered her most secret desire. Would the old Gods answer them if her own wouldn’t?

“Doesn’t that ceiling ever just make you wanna cry?” Dany asked wistfully.

“I never noticed before.,” Ros mumbled as she typed into her computer, the keys clicking and clacking. “The only room available is the presidential suite. It is 4,600 dragons a night,” Ros told her hesitantly, her eyes darting to her plain clothes.

“I’ll take it.”

“Madam, it is quite a bit more expensive than your original room. Are you sure you don’t wish to wait. We have a seating area and lots to do in the area while you wait.”

“I would like the presidential suite, please, Ros.”

“Madam Targaryen. I know you will find our presidential suite most comfortable,” Podrick appeared out of thin air at her side, giving a pointed look at the woman behind the counter before smiling down at her and holding out his arms to escort her to her room.

Walking back to the elevators, she heard a voice say, “Mr. Snow, can you sign my book?”

Following Podricks line of sight, she saw a man in a grey suit with dark curls pulled into a knot at the back of his head. Even from where she stood, she could see his god-like body, muscles so strong they looked like they might tear through the expensive material that clung so perfectly it looked like it was made for him.

Well, it is Mr. Snow, it was made for him. Dany rolled her eyes. A red-headed woman stood next to him, her hair twisted into an elegant coiffe. He faced Dany as he turned to grab the book to sign.

“Jon Snow.”

Let me start with the following principle: “Energy is the only universal currency: One of its many forms must be transformed to get anything done.” Economies are just intricate systems set up to do those transformations, and all economically significant energy conversions have (often highly undesirable) environmental impacts. Consequently, as far as the biosphere is concerned, the best anthropogenic energy conversions are those that never take place: No emissions of gases (be they greenhouse or acidifying), no generation of solid or liquid wastes, no destruction of ecosystems. The best way to do this has been to convert energies with higher efficiencies: Without their widespread adoption (be it in large diesel- and jet-engines, combined-cycle gas turbines, light-emitting diodes, smelting of steel, or synthesis of ammonia) we would need to convert significantly more primary energy with all attendant environmental impacts.

Conversely, what then could be more wasteful, more undesirable, and more irrational than negating a large share of these conversion gains by wasting them? Yet precisely this keeps on happening—and to indefensibly high degrees—with all final energy uses. Buildings consume about a fifth of all global energy, but because of inadequate wall and ceiling insulation, single-pane windows and poor ventilation, they waste at least between a fifth to a third of it, as compared with well-designed indoor spaces. A typical SUV is now twice as massive as a common pre-SUV vehicle, and it needs at least a third more energy to perform the same task.

The most offensive of these wasteful practices is our food production. The modern food system (from energies embedded in breeding new varieties, synthesizing fertilizers and other agrochemicals, and making field machinery to energy used in harvesting, transporting, processing, storing, retailing, and cooking) claims close to 20 percent of the world’s fuels and primary electricity—and we waste as much as 40 percent of all produced food. Some food waste is inevitable. The prevailing food waste, however, is more than indefensible. It is, in many ways, criminal.

Combating it is difficult for many reasons. First, there are many ways to waste food: from field losses to spoilage in storage, from perishable seasonal surpluses to keeping “perfect” displays in stores, from oversize portions when eating outside of the home to the decline of home cooking.

Second, food now travels very far before reaching consumers: The average distance a typical food item travels is 1,500 to 2,500 miles before being bought.

Third, it remains too cheap in relation to other expenses. Despite recent food-price increases, families now spend only about 11 percent of their disposable income on food (in 1960 it was about 20 percent). Food-away-from-home spending (typically more wasteful than eating at home) is now more than half of that total. And finally, as consumers, we have an excessive food choice available to us: Just consider that the average American supermarket now carries more than 30,000 food products.

Our society is apparently quite content with wasting 40 percent of the nearly 20 percent of all energy it spends on food. In 2025, unfortunately, this shocking level of waste will not receive more attention. In fact, the situation will only get worse. While we keep pouring billions into the quest for energy “solutions”—ranging from new nuclear reactors (even fusion!) to green hydrogen, all of them carrying their own environmental burdens—in 2025, we will continue to fail addressing the huge waste of food that took so much fuel and electricity to produce.

The short story below is one I wrote a long time ago (circa retail BC era), and then revisted for a writing prompt a couple years ago. It's a memory belonging to @gravekeeper-anna, one that is vicariously shared by Safrona here, though it has faded with some time.

I'll bold and color the part of it I don't feel is the best, though that is very hard to do for me. I really love this story.

The stronghold, forever under attack by outer forces, crumbled around her silently. Brick, stone and mortar crashed to the ground endlessly, leaving a heavy, black sky above. Barefoot, she stepped among the long dead corpses that littered the unprotected fortress, some half-buried, dead faces staring sightlessly at the only living trespasser. Their echoing death cries still stung the haunted air, mixed with screamed commands, the clash of metal, and the searing of fireballs as the spells hit home. The sounds were seemingly out of sync from what was really happening within the walls, for most of the fortress was already destroyed. The scenery was commonplace for her now, having been trapped inside the crumbling labyrinth for at least months now. In fact, the scene was one she knew. She had been here before many times, but in dreams that recurred, leaving her awakening in a cold sweat each night. That is until she decided that sleep was not so necessary anymore, and afforded herself instead increments of sleep when she could. However, one thing differed from her dreams, since she had walked through the portal, and entered this dark place–the hallway of voices, the entrancing voice that encouraged her to embrace the Darkness was missing. Now, she only seemed lost in this plane, doors only leading to more unrecognizable rooms which eternally fell upon themselves. This collapsing room was colossal, the arched ceiling now broken to invite the chaotic skies. Torn, vibrant flags draped across the stone ground and bodies, instead of the columns they were designed to hang  around so proudly. Perhaps once an oratory, or library, the room’s glory was now only a memory to the souls that formerly occupied this fortress. She let a soft sigh escape into the shadows of the ruin, a life’s breath that seemed to be engulfed by the lingering darkness. Far too long had she been here, seeking her answers, and the reply was an empty one. The unhinged door across the room was her next destination, and the witch reached for it with an almost irritated determination. She half expected the door to fall open when she touched it, but it remained intact as she pushed. The piece of intricately carved wood seemed to have no mass to it, though it looked to be quite heavy, but she pushed  it easily to peer into the next room. A broken lamp shone dismally upon the wreckage of a courtyard, or perhaps some type of garden. Light flickered weakly against the heavy night, until it wheezed its last bit of power and accepted the dark, which Annaliese had long grown accustomed to here. Azeroth had opened to her a world of battle, and she had seen her fair share of land and people lost to ongoing conflicts, but this place seemed a melding of what she might have seen, past and present. The skies above crackled much like Netherstorm, fed off the expended energies of a chaos new and old. Dead grass rustled under her feet as she walked on, a trite, trivial sound amongst the quieted bedlam playing all around her. A distant balcony caved in upon itself, slowly falling down the roof of the fortress, as if the destroyed stone had a millennia to hit the ground. Despite this, she walked on, filled with a calm, knowing that she was getting closer, somehow. She walked as if she knew exactly where she was going. A servant of the Great Dark would find the way, surely. She felt her confidence falter however, as she realized the ground below her bare feet blackened, and writhed. Tendrils solidified from the ground and wrapped around her legs, easing up the rest of her body, pulling her to the ground gently.  ‘It is only shadow, bid life,” the memory of Annaliese Handhour spoke, auburn haired and amber-eyed. And just as surely as she formed and used it to battle her enemies, she relaxed and let the shadow take her, secure in its embrace as it drew her below.

When the PS2 Mod of the 2009 Higurashi Cry Ch. 8 Matsuribayashi pt. 95

I was going to title this as the PS2 Mod Part Final, but I didn’t want to mislead anyone, because there’s still a bit to go.

One of the odd things I noticed while reading the PS2 modded version of the 2009 translation (2010 translation technically, but that’s kind of a whatever) is the tendency for them to switch between using the photographed backgrounds and the newer anime style backgrounds. I wonder if it’s down to budgetary constraints or something else? I wouldn’t claim that the original backgrounds are a higher resolution. Given the positively tiny screen resolution of the 2009 version I don’t think there’s any appreciable difference that you can glean from just a glance. I’m really terrible at discerning resolution just by looking at it, but all I know is that if you play the visual novel as is without making it full screen the window is not a particularly large one. I don’t think it’s a 640x480, but it definitely is sub 720. If File Explorer and MS Paint is to be believed each screenshot is a 642x507 sized picture, so make of that what you will. The 2009 versions are both restricted in the size of visual novel, it wasn’t until the remake and the 07th-Mod that you could adjust the screen resolutions to be bigger than the size of a post it note. Which really makes you think about screen resolutions because this was on a PS2, so you could in theory have played this on a large television. I think I had some point I was trying to make about the backgrounds, instead I got distracted talking about game resolutions.

Something I’ve noticed, and you may have as well, is the fact they reuse this ceiling shot a lot for a bunch of rooms. I know it’s generic enough that really who the hell cares, but it just amuses me that this particular background, both in the PS2, and as the basis for the 07th-Mod gets used for multiple hospitals, police stations, and government buildings over the course of the series.

A somewhat peculiar change that only exists in the modded version of Higurashi is the change of Ohtaka’s name to Ootaka. Every other version he appears in; the original translation, the newer one (unmodded), the anime, even going as far back as Tsumihoroboshi and all of those versions there he’s called Ohtaka. It wasn’t a one-time slip either, this was a consistent translation thing in the modded version whenever Ootaka showed up there.

A uguisu is a Japanese bush warbler. The funny thing about the design of this “hotel room” is that this is the screenshot they use in Meakashi for Shion’s apartment.
